Birdgirl: This Is My World

by Mya-Rose Craig

Mya-Rose Craig came to prominence through her work as a naturalist, conservationist and environmentalist.

As a keen birdwatcher from a very young age, twitching forms the heart of this story; Mya-Rose’s passion for the birds is a rare and compelling obsession. In Birdgirl, we will follow Mya-Rose on her travels to find thousands of spectacular and rare species of bird, while she gives us a unique insight into what it’s like to be a twitcher and shares with us the reasons why she finds birds so full of wonder and importance. Her love of the natural world has extended into every area of her life, inspiring her choices to become a climate and race activist. But this is also the story of a family and their darker moments. Throughout her childhood and into her teens, Mya-Rose watched her mother battle a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder. The book will highlight how the family’s love of birds helped them to heal the trauma of a mental health crisis.

In February 2020, Mya-Rose Craig became the youngest person ever to be awarded a Doctorate of Science by Bristol University, inspired by her environmental activism, at the age of 17. Shortly after, she shared a stage with Greta Thurnberg. Like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafazi, Mya-Rose is a young girl who has faced extreme challenges in her life. Her journey is one inspired by nature, as she learned to move out of the darkness and into light by looking up at the sky. This book is a manifesto for hope, for a saner, fairer world, and one that will be inspiring, for young adults and adults alike.
