Shirley Conran was born in London. Art school trained, Shirley started her working life in PR; after marrying Terence Conran she handled all publicity for his company and was co-founder of CE of Conran Fabrics. For nine years she was a judge on the Design Council. She started writing as a journalist when she became design consultant to the Daily Mail, and she subsequently became an editor for the Daily Mail and for the Observer. Her first book, Superwoman, selling more than a million copies worldwide, was followed by further best-sellers. She lives in London and is the mother of Jasper and Sebastian Conran, both of whom are designers.
